All about CoolSculpting (Cryolipolysis)

CoolSculpting (Cool Sculpting) or Cryolipolysis as it is also known is a non-surgical method used to reduce local fat deposits on the body.

CoolSculpting uses Cryolipolysis to cool the fatty layer under the skin in such a way that the fat cells – which are more sensitive to cold than the surrounding tissue – die. The dead fat cells are then transported away by the body naturally.

There is scientific evidence which shows that CoolSculpting works. It reduces body fat in treated areas. The results are permanent as the body cannot create new fat cells.

The fat cells freeze to death

The technique known as Cryolipolysis which is used for CoolSculpting was created by the American doctor Rox Anderson. Through his studies he noted that children that have sucked on ice-lollies for too long lost the fat deposits in their cheeks.

It has been known for some time that fat is affected and stiffens at considerably lower temperatures than other substances. With this new knowledge the company Zeltiq together with Dr. Rox created the CoolScultping technique.

One has now created a machine which makes it commercially possible to precision cool body tissue to the temperature at which the fat cells ’freeze to death’ and thereafter disappear. Clinics with this machine can now offer CoolSculpting.

CoolSculpting treatment information (Cryolipolysis)

Cool Sculpting is a simple and painless treatment associated with few risks. It is performed by surgeons or nurses that have undergone training with the machine. The patient can return to normal activities following the treatment.

Which results can I expect from Cool Sculpting?

Just as with liposuction CoolSculpting is a method that removes stubborn localised fat deposits in patients that are in other ways in good shape. It is not a way to treat general obesity.
CoolScuplting is used primarily to reduce fat from the stomach, hips, back, bra-area, back of the arms as well as the inside, outside and back of the thighs.

The final result of a CoolSculpting can be seen after 2-3 months. The manufacturer of the product points to studies that who a 20% decrease of fat in the treated area and one treatment. Other studies show at least 10%. One generally performs 1-3 treatments per area.

CoolSculpting cannot replace traditional liposuction but is an alternative for those with the right prerequisites looking for a simpler treatment without pain or rehabilitation.

The CoolSculpting procedure

A CoolSculpting takes 1-3 hours to perform and you can return to normal activities straight after the procedure.

The treatment begins with information and documentation of the patient’s current condition through weighing, measuring, photographing etc.

When the preparations are ready the patient is put on a gurney where they will sit or lie depending on which area is to be treated.

The doctor/nurse cleans the skin, marks up the area of treatment and applies a gel like material over the area. Thereafter the machine is attached. The mouthpiece creates a vacuum that sucks the skin towards to cooling panels which start the so called cryolipolysis.

Some patients experience some discomfort when the tissue is cooled the 12 degrees which are necessary to achieve the desired effect. The sensation is much like having a cooling pack held against the skin. It is however not a great discomfort and throughout the treatment it is possible to read a magazine, converse or watch tv. After a couple of hours the mouth piece is removed and the treatment is done.

Directly following the treatment the area is massaged. Some redness, tenderness, swelling and loss of feeling can be experience for a couple of weeks. However not in such a way that it limits the patient’s everyday routines, such as work and exercise.

Prices for CoolSculpting

The cost for a treatment with CoolSculpting depends on what area is to be treated and the number of treatment session required achieving the desired result.

For larger areas or “dual areas” such as a full stomach, hips, (both love handles), inner thighs, outer thighs (riding breeches), gynecomastia, etc, the price is approximately £1300-1600. With an average need of two treatments the total cost will end on £2000.

The price for a fat freezing with CoolSculpting of smaller areas such as tummy flab, upper arms, buttocks or flanks (bra flab) is about £700-900 per treatment session. The total cost will end at £1400-1800 for an average treatment containing 2 treatment sessions.
